Frugal Recipe of the Week-Homemade Condensed Cream of Chicken Soup

I really enjoy Cream of Chicken added to my dishes. I am aware they are a can of mystery and unhealthiness. Oh my...my...I love casseroles and crockpot meals with it. I found this great recipe and I am so excited.  I really love Tammy Recipes.  I don't like making people have to do a chase for a recipe but since she is the creator of this Master Goodness I felt it only right to lead you to her great site.

  1. I keep intending to try one of those knock off recipes. I am sad to say I keep stocking up when the cream of chicken soup is on sale.

  2. Thanks for the link to that recipe, Chrissy. I am trying to eat healthy foods and have recently lowered my sugar intake dramatically in order to bring down my cholesterol level. I try to avoid processed foods if at all possible. I now make my own tomato sauce as the one I was buying was 1/4 sugar. Amazing!

    1. That is my goal as well as is to switch to more whole, healthier versions!!!

  3. We don't use those condensed soup cans because they tend to cause a reaction in me (maybe the MSG?). We have been doing the homemade versions for years and they actually taste better than the canned and of course, are cheaper to make!

We make our own spaghetti and pizza sauces and used to make our own ketchup but we found one local that doesn't have HFCS and is natural and cheap. I also make our own spice mixes and other sauces. I find that I'm salt-sensitive, so I have to keep it low and making them homemade is the way I can control that. I wouldn't say that making your own spaghetti sauce is frugal (I think it is more expensive than store-bought) but homemade pizza sauce is WAY cheaper than the store-bought - at least here!

    1. I really want to take a few days when my summer break starts to stock up on things like homemade seasons and sauces. What is your ketchup recipe?

    2. Bev's Homemade Ketchup
      28oz jar and then some

      18oz tomato paste
      1c water
      6T vinegar
      3/4t dry mustard
      3/4t cinnamon
      1t salt
      1/4t allspice
      1/4c brown sugar

Mix all and whisk till smooth. Store in the refrigerator.

Notes: I add salt till it tastes right. Sometimes we only add a tablespoon or two of brown sugar because we like our ketchup less sweet and more salty. This is personal preference - so start small and add as you go to your liking.
